While cleaning and inspecting our case, I noticed some blobs that I did not think were original. My worry was this was a ham-fisted repair by a previous owner (PO). Just to be sure, I contacted the machine shop that did the work on our engine. Ollies got back to me right away and indicated the following:
the welded area’s that are pictured are for the deep inserts at #3 and #4 spigots. We weld the case so we can install 49mm inserts, these are known area’s where the case cracks. This helps strengthen the case in these area’s.
That is a relief. So much to learn. I’m grateful that Ollie’s has been so patient with all my questions.
