Rods. Originally this post was to be titled “rods”, but then I thought I might mislead a bunch of porn searches and I’d hate for that to end in disappointment. So I thought it better to be more explicit and title it “connecting rods”.
Soren pulled together a nice set of used connecting rods. These are the .01 variety. Meaning the 616.103.101.01 part number used on 356 C / SC and 912. This is the favorite of The Maestro. No oil hole drilled through the beam of the rod into the wrist pin bushing area. The concern being the holes would be a place for the rod to fail.
We decided not to magnaflux the rods. This saved about $50. I would normally err on the side of caution, but Soren is confident it’s not necessary in this case. The core set was from a first time tear down, and showed no sign of having been exposed to anything but normal running. No dramatic engine failure and no distortion of the big ends. They were straight and with no twist.
They got reconditioned with new bushings and nuts. As you can see by the handwriting on each rod, Soren balanced the set to within 1 gram of total weight. He also weighed and balanced the big ends.
