I finally got myself satisfied enough with the paint finish on the oil filter canister to apply the decals. I got them from Deluxe Customs, and am quite pleased with them.
They are stickers, which to me means self-adhesive / peel and stick. As opposed to decals which require wetting to allow water transfer from a sheet and slid into place. My memory from building models in my youth is that decals tear quite easily. I’ve also read they won’t stick to powder coated surfaces.
The ones from Deluxe are quite thin, which is nice from an appearance perspective. They were also durable enough that they were forgiving if you needed to reposition a bit.
