Following up on my tests to find the best possible powder coat color match for engine tin, I started looking for spray can matches as well. There are several cautionary tales to not powder coat parts that touch oil, such as the oil filter canister and the oil filler can. A few votes against powder coating the flapper boxes too.
One might think that powder coating some pieces and spray painting others would lead to color mismatches. This is undoubtedly true, but so were the originals. Apparently each vendor was responsible for supplying the parts already painted, independent of each other. I can validate that by some degree by way of noticing that the silver fan shroud does not match the silver oil filter canister.
So on to the test results. Perhaps it’s no surprise, Stoddard Filter Canister Silver is quite a good match. I think it has a bit too much metallic.
Matching black to the oil filter canister lid and oil filler was not so easy. I tried a number of options:
- Stoddard NLA Gloss Black
- Wurth Flexi-Trim Satin Black
- Eastwood Original Chassis Black Satin (25%-35% Gloss Level)
- Eastwood Original Chassis Black Gloss (85% + Gloss Level)
Unfortunately, I don’t consider any of them spot on. Eastwood Original Chassis Black Gloss is the closest in my opinion. It is very close in terms of color, I think it’s just a bit too glossy. If there were as semigloss version if it I would feel better. I did look at the Eastwood UNDERHOOD BLACK in Semigloss which is 15-19% gloss level. Despite the “semigloss” in the name, it is actually less glossy than the Eastin “Satin” offering.
