I’m assembling a batch of parts to go out for plating. There is a minimum order cost, so best to get it done in as few attempts as possible. Really need to get this done so we can move on with assembly of the engine.
There is a lot of debate as to what original and correct plating was, and it seems to have evolved through the years. Including but not limited to:
- Paint of various colors
- Phosphate black or silver
- Oxide (black)
- Zinc (clear / silver)
- Cad 1 is silver (clear – as some call it)
- Cad 2 is gold (yellow)
There does seem to be consensus that the gold cad didn’t appear until later, circa 912 era.
For early 356 there’s some question to whether silver finish was achieved by zinc or cad I. It seems like people who have tested engine components found it was inconsistent even on the same engine.
I landed on zinc based on the assertion of the Porsche 356: The Engine Handbook: An Engine Assembly Guide, and that if I ever want to do plating on my own it will be easier and safer if it’s zinc. Our current plan is to go with Van Nuys Plating.
All that said, The Maestro Harry Pellow seems to have done cad on all his stuff…
