When attempting to track down original parts for vintage cars, it is really helpful if you know the part manufacturer’s part number in addition to the car builder’s part. Meaning if I had a photo or one in my hand I could look at the number on the starter and see if it matched. Case and point with regard to starters and generators (aka alternators) for Porsche cars which were made by Bosch. There are lots of components that could be made to work, but are not “correct”.
I was hoping to find a reference like DerWhites Bosch Electrical Parts for 356 Porsches!, where he basically cross referenced a bunch of Bosch service manuals with the Porsche parts books and made charts. I have found it to be an amazing reference in terms of trying to find correct original parts on our 356.
On a whim, I contacted Bosch with the Porsche part numbers to see what they’d say. I didn’t even expect a reply honestly. To my delight, they came back with quite a bit of info on the original models, as well as the currently existing options (circa 2022).
